Undercut / Overcut
=> these are 2 anglicism terms used in motorsport to refer to the act of overtaking an opponent in front of you through pit stops.
Undercut = to overtake an opponent who is ahead of us by pitting earlier than them.
Overcut = to overtake an opponent who is ahead of us by entering the pit later than them.
To put it simply, on certain circuits, tyre degradation is significant, and in order not to lose time behind a car, a driver chooses to do the "undercut" to try to gain the upper hand with new tyres and overtake as soon as the other car also comes into the pits.
Conversely, on other circuits where tyre degradation is much less significant, a driver wanting to overtake the competitor ahead of them could extend their stint after that competitor has entered the pits to change their tyres. He would employ the "overcut", using tyres that are less worn and still performing well, and would then also pit in order to emerge ahead of the competitor who was in front at the start.
